Personal Exception Veto

Dismissing a general claim or data by citing personal experience as if it overrides broader evidence.

"Works fine for me."

"I've never had that problem, so I'm not sure what you're talking about."

"Sounds like user error. I've been using it for years with zero issues."

"I don't know anyone who's experienced that."

Why It's Unproductive

Personal experience is real data, but it's one data point. Treating "it hasn't happened to me" as proof that a widespread problem doesn't exist shuts down the conversation without engaging with the evidence. It's tempting because lived experience feels more concrete than statistics, and nobody wants to believe something they use, and like, has problems. But it puts the other person in an impossible position: they can't argue with your experience, and you haven't addressed theirs.

The Better Move

Share your experience without using it as a verdict. "That hasn't been my experience, but I'm curious what setup you're on" keeps the door open. Your anecdote and their data can coexist, and the interesting question is usually why the experiences differ.

Why It's Better

Turns a dead end into a useful comparison. Different experiences with the same thing often point to the real answer: maybe it's a platform issue, a configuration difference, or a use-case gap. You only find that out if both sides stay in the conversation.


Examples

OP: "Studies show that open-plan offices reduce face-to-face collaboration by about 70%."
Antipattern: "I work in an open office and our team collaborates all the time. Sounds like a culture problem, not an office problem."
Better: "Interesting. Our open office feels pretty collaborative, but we're a small team. I wonder if the effect scales with company size."

OP: "A lot of users are reporting that the latest update kills battery life on older devices."
Antipattern: "My phone is three years old and battery is fine after the update. People just need to manage their background apps."
Better: "Mine seems okay so far, but I'm on a different model. Are the reports concentrated on specific hardware?"

OP: "Research suggests that code reviews catch significantly more bugs than automated testing alone."
Antipattern: "I've shipped production code for 15 years and our test suite catches everything. Code reviews are a waste of time."
Better: "Our test coverage is pretty good and catches most things, but we've also had reviews catch design issues that tests wouldn't. Probably depends on what you're measuring."
